Who Are The Descendants of Amalek?

amalekThe Bible tells us that when the Israelites left Egypt, they were attacked from behind by Amalek and his people. The Amalekites attacked those who were lagging slowly behind the rest of the people: the elderly, the sick, and the weak. Instead of confronting the Israelite people in a traditional battle or war, Amalek ambushed them, as a terrorist would.

In a tradition that encourages questioning and disagreement over text, there is only one way to read this story. The Amalekite people are the epitome of evil. They didn’t merely go to war with the Israelites. They slaughtered those who could not defend themselves. And therefore, God commanded the Israelites to wipe out the memory of Amalek.

Alongside this story, we read a portion from the Writings (part of the larger cannon of the Bible, but not part of the Five Books of Moses) about King Saul. Saul fought a war with King Agog, a descendant of Amalek, and was commanded to kill him, but didn’t, out of pity. Thus the people of Amalek lived on, to continue to torment the Jews for generations.

Since the time of King Saul, the Jews have faced many “Amaleks”, set out for our destruction. Ironically, many of them come from the same area of the world - what we know today as Iran, formerly known as Persia. Some of the ancestral connections are more obvious than others. It is clear from the text that Haman, the villain in the Book of Esther was a direct descendant of Agog. Some have made the connection that Sadaam Hussein and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, President of Iran (modern Persia), are also descendants of Agog and Amalek - and given what they want(ed) to do to the Jews and where they come from, it would come as no surprise if there was ever biological evidence to support this.

In modern terminology, Amalek has come to represent those who want to exterminate the Jews. In a broader sense, I would say that Amalek represents the senseless hatred, the murderous impulse, and the love of seeing other people suffer.

If you’ve read this far, I’m sure you’d like to know how this ancient Biblical story relate to our lives today! And I will tell you!

Thursday evening marks the holiday of Purim. The holiday where Queen Esther saved the Jewish people of Persia from being wiped out by the wicked Haman. It is a time of merriment, celebration, and partying. After all, we survived! It is a time of dressing up in costume, eating lots of delicious food, and, depending on how you read the text, getting rather drunk. Based on when it happens to fall this year, the holiday will last for a full three days in Jerusalem. In an ideal time, it should be an extended party that would make any frat boy jealous!

But this isn’t an ideal time. Merely two weeks after the tragedy of Mercaz HaRav yeshiva, it is hard to turn sorrow into merriment. The police are warning that this week marks 40 days after Mugniyah was killed in Syria - an event that Hizbollah attributes to Israel - and are on high alert for revenge attacks on Israel. Travel restrictions are scheduled for the West Bank. Warnings are being issued about specific roads and areas. And obviously, the residents of Ashkelon, S’derot, and other Israeli cities in shooting range of Gaza, are expecting an increase in rocket attacks.

At the same time, an extremist rabbi has called for revenge attacks on Arabs, a protest of right-wing settlers turned into an attempt to bring down the home of the Mercaz HaRav terrorist, and a prominent Haredi rabbi, known for his legal decisions, issued a ruling that yeshivot (learning centers) have to fire the Arabs working for them, and already the ruling has begun being followed.

It is clear to me that the leaders of Hamas and Hezbollah may not genetically be the descendants of Amalek, but ideologically, they are one and the same. But it scares me to know that there are Jews prepared to act in Amalek’s name as well. We are heading into a very dark time if there are Jews who are ready to give up the Torah laws in favor of revenge.

The State must defend its citizens. And there is a valid argument to be made that Israel isn’t doing a good enough job of defense. However, this will most certainly be the beginning of the end, if Jews stoop to the level of Amalek and attack those weaker than us, without the pretext and rules of war. In a place where Jews murder, take revenge on, and discriminate against Arabs, they will ultimately murder, take revenge on, and discriminate against their fellow Jews. And that is unthinkable.

You are speaking like a Palestinian terrorist yourself. I have very rarely come across such a piece of gutter literature that has analogies from mythologies such as the Bible to justify what you are doing (or for not doing) today.

It is not new that Israel has often cited the Bible for justifying it's right to a nation. Only through biblical references you would find that there was a country called Israel. There is no modern or medieval history of Israel whatsoever before its creation after the World War II.

The cunning behind your post is that you can cleverly pointed out the Amaleks of the biblical times to the modern day Persians or Iranians. This is exactly the kind of poison the radical Islamic mullahs brainwash minds to become terrorists. The Hamas and al-Qaida certainly knows the language you are speaking here.

I am sure you must be smiling now after reading my comment :-)

u say a state must defend its citizens. defend from whom? foreign invasion or killers from outside the country. in ur country who r the palestinians? members of a separate country or citizens of ur own country or members of ur country by the virtue of being occupied by israelis.

the first thing u must understand is that israel has occupied palestinian land and it must vacate it. u can not say the violence must end before u decide to leave. u were the first to use violence so u will have to be the last to do so.

Iran is doing what is write for the region. It has brought the much stability in the Middle-East by countering the Zionist-American hegemony. It's a matter of time when Iran will have a nuclear bomb. That will speed things up towards a lasting peace. That is when the Israelis will show some real interest in peace talks and come to a solution.

During Old Testament days: Amaleks see to exterminate the Jews

6th Century BC: Haman and his wife Zeresh instigate a plot to kill all the Jews of ancient Persia.

Oct 26, 2006: Ahmadinejad: Israel must be wiped off the map.

The pattern is unmistakable. I am sure there would be many such examples in between the 3 instances I mentioned here. I applaud Shira Dukiyum for her research on this. Extermination of the Jews is deeply rooted into the psyche of the Persians. It makes it all the more dangerous for the world to see nuclear weapons in Iran's hands. It won't be a holocaust but apocalypse.

One day the Jews shall inherit the earth. They already control most of the businesses in the West. The world's only superpower USA is virtually run by Jews as they form the top lawmakers and even most of the lawyers are Jews.

With centuries of being scattered all across the globe, they have gained a great deal of knowledge and know the strength and weaknesses of almost every nation they had lived.

Jews have been historically non-violent people. They had been successfully businessmen, lawyers, artisans, administrators etc. This had enabled them to live better than the non-Jew locals of various lands. This is perhaps why they had been persecuted more than any community on earth.

thats the kind of evil articles that hitler might have read against jews to effect the holocaust... it is a well known fact that he did during his days in austria. as an israeli i thought the author would have shown more sensitivity towards the issue.

history or no history both the jews and the muslims must see what is happening today and choose the path of peace by arriving at solutions that will rob extremism from both the ends. strip the extremists of their causes and have lasting peace.... no one likes bloodshed and violence... its peace we all seek for.

You have done two things: you have intertwined the Biblical narrative with history. This is dangerous and dubious. You might want to see how scholars go about it at the Yahoo Group run by Dr. Jim West. There is in fact an ongoing debate about the historicity of the Bible and whether History can ever ever embrace the sacredness of the Covenant. You do great injustice by denuding the history of your own people. Also any attempt by you to comment on historiography in this short span will only go to show a lack of understanding of both the Bible and the History. Remember that in the Torah and the Ketubiim, Yahweh ( the later Greek name of God, never by Israel used here in OT sense) tells us never to see the Bible as history.
Now the moment you write of Biblical hatreds, you deny the hermeneutics of the Bible.
We can only agree to your pejorative sense of history is we disregard the sacred woof of Biblical narrative. I would rather believe in the Bible’s sacredness than in your polemics.

Shira ’Dukiyum’ .... You are literally going just in the opposite direction of what your name, or title or whatever, says. After reading your cunning article, any intelligent person (by intelligent I mean any ordinary human with simple common sense) would make out your real intentions. Your words are nothing but a fabulous bag of misconceptions and hatred towards other religions.

You may cite the Bible or you may even solace yourself by penning down articles such as this one, but, I’m sorry to say, you have failed drastically to conceal your true emotions, which are very similar to those of any other religious extremist who gives a damn for other peoples’ faith and thinks that HE IS THE ONLY ONE WHO IS RIGHT, AND HIS PEOPLE ARE THE ONLY RIGHTEOUS ONES.

Give me just one reason to believe that YOU WANT PEACE IN ISRAEL. After reading your article (this one and your earlier posts) I have made a sketch of you in my mind that has a very uncanny resemblance to one of those Amalekites, or terrorists as you portray them.

Either you have failed to wipe that tag off yourself or I’ve made a grave mistake by thinking that you are an Israelite!

I’m shocked to see some of these responses. Did you actually read the article to its end? I didn’t use the bible to justify anything. In fact, I only referenced the bible to refer to the despicable-ness of a behavior that I hope both Palestinians and Israelis don’t stoop to. I ask that you read my articles in their entirety before attacking them and calling me a radical terrorist.

Who got Jesus crucified? Jews who manipulated the Romans! Once your blue-eyed guy Albert Einstein was in a class in England when the teacher narrated the betrayal of Christ and everyone looked at him.

If we talk of Bible and the OT we need not go beyond what the folks in medieval times thought.

Once upon a time there was a queen called Elizabeth, and during her time had one of the world's greatest writers and dramatists called William Shakespeare.

Read the Merchant of Venice and you shall come across a character called Shylock. Of course Shylock was a Jew (in the fiction), but tell us the reason why your creed has been so loathed and made subjects of so many numerous pogroms?

Miss Israel, try understand history in wholesome, not in abject or in piecemeals. As an Iraqi Christian I denounce your thoughts. You are pathetic.

@Shira:

Relax mate, don’t get hyper. I am actually smiling.... err... chuckling now. Well your piece began in such a way that it was bound to evoke some emotions. Well, it’s almost 5 am in the morning now here in New Delhi... I got up to relieve my bladders...

Don’t be shocked, take things as compliment. Hmmm... would have liked to give you my opinion, but won’t now. Maybe when we talk privately so that you understand the psyche of a few people from different demographies.

But yes buddy, don’t you think you messed it up with your initial lines?

Forget it and move ahead mate.

Oh yea pal! Did you hear the song Run Samson Run?

Do not add spin. Accept a foible and the world would love you. See, as an Indian we are your friends, not enemies despite we still consider Yasser Arafat as our blood brother.

Things have changed, we buy your weapons' systems. But please do not give us the bull crap, esp the kind you dished out in the article above. I sincerely hope to see a clarification added.

Sumit - now a US green card holder.

Thank you brother.

Ha ha ha!!!!!

Shira, we don't doubt your intentions. I have read your post in its entirety and it doesn't take a word out of context what Rhapsodysinger and Sumit said. The problem is that you typically tried to act like old-fashioned Israeli politicians who were never tired of giving the kind of examples that you did. They are now laughing stock in the world community.

Picking a cue from them is akin to resigning yourself into Zionist ideology that would mean little or no support in today's world. I hope you take out a few minutes to disabuse the disoriented here whom as your fellow countryman in the US can barely bear to see as the world at large is viewing now.
